WGC lost their second of three pre-season games, when they went down to a goal in each half in a hastily arranged friendly with Barton Rovers of the Southern League Div 1 Central.
Manager Adam Fisher's former club, where he was first-team coach, showed better finishing than the Citizens in this game played on neutral ground in Hitchin.
Fisher attempted to give playing time to those potential members of his new look squad, who hadn't figured much in the 3-0 away defeat to UCL Premier Peterborough Sports and the 4-1 'home' win over FC Romania of the Essex Senior League, earlier in midweek.
Among those were keeper Ollie Leslie, ex-Colney Heath, who had 45 minutes in the win over FC Romania and got another half here. There were also second outings for newcomers Martin Standen, Ben Long and Jamie Arlick in the starting line-up.
WGC created an early chance with a fine headed knock-down from Ashley Kersey that saw Dave Parkinson's shot deflect off a defender to safety,
Luke Robins missed a good chance to put WGC ahead when a huge free-kick from the again impressive full-back Lewis Endacott found the midfielder in space, but he turned his effort past a post.
John McGrandles came forward for a set piece, again flicked on by Kersey, but headed straight at the Barton keeper, before the central defender was found wanting for pace, as the Beds team's tricky winger Rod Young outpaced him to a through ball to drive the opening goal past Leslie in 20 minutes.
WGC created a couple of good opportunities before the interval, falling to Parkinson and Robins, in turn, but both were hit straight at the keeper.
Manager Fisher made four changes at the break, bringing on Joe Croft in goal, while Sam Perrin, Josh Bronti and James Ewington replaced Kersey, Robins and Jay Welsh.
Endacott, switched to left-back, had to clear a Barton effort off the line in the opening minutes of the half, before Perrin showed up to good effect, winning a challenge and overlapping well to set up Bronti, but again the final effort didn't unduly trouble the keeper.
On 65 minutes, Barton doubled their lead. A long free-kick into the area saw ex-WGC man Bobby Dance, back with one of his former clubs, knock the effort down for co-striker Matty Nolan to fire past Croft to complete the victory.
WGC: (starting line-up): Leslie, Endacott, Standen, McGrandles, Welsh, Payne, Long, Robins, Kersey, Arlick, Parkinson. subs:- Croft, Perrin, Bronti, Ewington, Arnott, Hoy (all used).
WGC impressed in beating FC Romania two nights earlier 4-1, with Dave Pakrinson, Martin Standen, Ashley Kersey and James Ewington all getting on the scoresheet, in a fixture played at the University of Herts.
