BATTLING Langford became only the second team this season to hold league leaders WGC to a draw at Herns Lane and the Mid Beds side did so with 10 men for 70 minutes of this clash.
Langford emulated Risborough Ranger's achievement in October of holding the Citizens on their own ground. Only neighbours Codicote have beaten WGC at home this season.
The visitors were reduced to 10 after an unseemly scuffle on the touchline involving nearly all the players on both sides, after 21 minutes.
It started when Jay Lovell and Langford's Carlos Liroz got tangled up in a challenge. After matters settled down, referee Lauskin showed a red card to Langford's Ryan Nicholls for throwing a punch and booked Joel Norris.
Aaron Cato had the first chance of the game in four minutes, but screwed his effort across the face of goal. Two minutes later WGC were ahead. A bout of head tennis was ended with some neat control and a fine through ball from Craig Arnott, into the path of Jason Caswell, who slipped his shot wide of Langford keeper Scott Waters for 1-0.
The veteran, bulky Waters went on to be the main reason WGC couldn't add to their score in the remaining 84 minutes.
He produced a series of fine saves as Adam Fisher's side pressed, particularly late in the game and with some heroic defending and two goalline clearances - one in each half - from Daryl Smith headers, Langford kept the lead to just one, slender goal.
As the game wore on, WGC tended to over-elaborate and much of the cutting thrust of recent weeks, exhibited particularly at Winslow 10 days before, was missing.
Just when it looked as if one goal would have to suffice, Langford struck deep into stoppage time. Matt Kenneford's instant pass set Connor Waite away. Lovell did well to temporarily halt his progress, but Waite squeezed a pass across goal for substitute Sean Murphy to strike past a largely unused Joe Croft and Langford had earned their point.
WGC: Croft, Lovell, Kenna, Dekanski, Brettell, Cato (Arnott M 59),Cifuentes (James 59), Smith, Arnott (C). Caswell, Norris (Perrin 74).
