WGC'S Youth's 100 per cent record in their first season in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League was dented in the final minute of this entertaining meeting with Sawbridgeworth.
In literally the last attack of the game, the East Herts side claimed a point from the clash, when a left-wing cross fell to striker Sam Chaplin and he drove in a shot that WGC keeper Marcus Bourne got hands to, but couldn't keep out.
WGC Youth had dominated most of the clash and keeper Bourne had a relatively quiet night, while his Sawbo counterpart Elliott Cockcroft, who had played in goal for the Essex Senior League's senior side, when they met WGC in a first-team Herts Charity Shield tie, had a busier evening.
The young Citizens had led from the 25th minute, when an effort from the outstanding Seb Melandez had been blocked and even though he was grounded, WGC striker Nathan Isherwood hooked it home past Cockcroft into the net.
They had the ball in the net a second time, when powerful midfielder Phil Ball went up with Cockcroft and bundled the effort in, but it was ruled out for a foul on the keeper. Another Melandez effort, late in the half, billowed the side netting.
WGC Yth came on strongly at the start of the second 45 minutes when first-team squad member Reggie Ross was introduced, but Ross struck a golden opening over the bar, when set up by Jordan Tring within five minutes of the restart.
Melandez then got to the by-line and cut his cross back for Ball to strike, but Cockcroft saved low down.
Ball also had a header from a corner cleared off the line as a second WGC Yth goal seemed certain to come.
But Sawbridgeworth Yth repelled them successfully and in the closing quarter began to make in-roads of their own.
Chaplin struck a dipping volley just wide 10 minutes from the finish, which was a warning that WGC Yth didn't heed and when the chance came again to him in the game's final minute, this time he made no mistake.
